How to move into a new home without the stress

If you’ve bought a new home and you’ve got your moving date confirmed, there’s a lot to think about!

Moving house is undeniably stressful, so you’ll need to find ways to streamline the process. Whether you’re hauling your belongings across the country or moving down the road, there are plenty of opportunities to make it easier.

No matter the scale or size or your move, here’s how to get it done and keep your stress levels to a minimum.

1. Planning and preparation

The early bird always gets the worm. Don’t underestimate the importance of starting your house move prep well in advance of the moving date, even if that means taking some time away from your hobbies and family!

Here are a few of the tasks we’d recommend completing early:

• Write a moving checklist: Figure out what’s staying, what you’d like to take with you, and what you expect from your new home.

• Set a realistic timeline: It’s okay to be ambitious, but make sure you’ve got the time and resources to meet your vision.

• Declutter: Now is the time to get rid of anything that you wouldn’t like to see in your new home. Learn how to throw it away!

• Do your research: Find removal companies and van hire options to make sure that moving day is sorted in advance.

2. Pack smart

Organisation is key – and that phrase takes a whole new meaning when it comes to moving house. Learning about the most effective packaging techniques will ensure that you can take as much as possible with you.

Furthermore, you should think about the materials you’ll pack with and labelling your items too. Whether you use vacuum-packed polythene bags or clear plastic boxes, knowing the contents of each container will prove invaluable when it comes to unpacking.

We also recommend packing room by room, keeping a sense of structure in your new home. And to stay comfortable when everything gets chaotic, you should pack an ‘essentials bag’ that contains everything you’d usually need for an overnight stay.

3. Moving Day management

Managing moving day itself is an important part of this process too. It involves confirming arrangements with your removal company, protecting the floors and doorways, and outlining a clear plan for loading and unloading.

If you can’t communicate with your removals firm before moving day itself, it could be worth keeping the details to a minimum. You don’t want to set yourself up for disappointment, but it’s still worth adding a sense of structure to their task.

Make sure someone’s available to help with the important furniture and items at the old property and the new one too.

4. Settle in

Try to make your transition into the new home as smooth as possible.

You should try to unpack strategically, avoiding putting any extra pressure on yourself to get this mammoth task done quickly. It’s okay if you struggle at first, and it’s totally understandable if you need support during the process.

It’s worth taking some time to get familiar with your new area. Introduce yourself to the new neighbours and don’t forget the excitement of moving into new build homes. You’ll be part of a community and perfectly positioned to lead a modern, connected lifestyle.

Our final tip – don’t leave the admin until the last minute! Make sure that all relevant organisations and authorities know about your move, redirecting communications to your new address. Transparency and efficiency make any move much smoother.
