Get ready for a summer of garden parties

Nothing defines the British summer better than the garden party. As soon as the sun starts shining, we somehow manage to get family and friends round and munching their way through a burger off the BBQ before you can say ‘it looks like rain’.

Well, summer is finally underway; everyone had their dose of strawberries and cream at Wimbledon, the sun popped out and the kids have even broken up for the holidays, so it’s about time to get the garden ready.

After a cold, harsh winter, the plants are probably wilted, the paving discoloured, the grass overgrown and the patio in need of a good clean. If you’re planning on throwing a few BBQs or outdoor parties this summer, you’ll need to get started as soon as possible.

Weeding

If you don’t continually tend to weeds, it can be a mammoth task. The trick is to not do it all at once and just pull a few every now and again for 15 minutes or so. While you’re chatting on the phone or waiting for dinner to cook, pop out into the garden and make a start. Begin with the ugliest ones, as the nicer looking weeds can be used as fillers if necessary.

Cleaning

A combination of rain, ice and snow can wreak havoc to your beautiful paving. The layer of green slime might seem almost impossible to get rid of but with some tools like karcher pressure washers they’ll be ready for the party in no time at all. You might want to give plastic garden furniture a quick blast too to remove any built up grime.

Painting

Over the winter you’re wood is bound to fade but you’ll be surprised at how much difference a lick of paint can make. Whether you attack the fencing, garden shed or even the back door, a fresh coast will give the garden a much cleaner look and brighter feel.

Once you’ve got all the mundane tasks out of the way, you’ll be able to start planning your summer of garden parties. It does take a bit of time and effort but if you want to kick back with a cocktail in the sun without worrying about whether your guests are inspecting your flower beds then it’s effort well spent.

To get started with the garden revamp, you’ll need some basic tools and equipment thought. You will be able to find everything you need, including spades, shovels, lawn mowers and karcher products at Homebase so take a look online today.

A 70's child, I’ve been married for a Very Long Time, and appear to have made four children, and collected one large and useless dog along the way. I work, I have four children, I have a dog… ergo, I do not do dusting or ironing. I began LittleStuff back in (gulp) 2004. I like huge mugs of tea. And Coffee. And Cake. And a steaming cone of crispy fresh fluffy chips, smothered in salt and vinegar. #healthyeater When I grow up I am going to be quietly graceful, organised and wear lipstick every day. In the meantime I *may* have a slight butterfly-brain issue.
