All About Threads, the New App from Meta

The parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has launched Threads, a new social media product that directly competes with Twitter. This announcement comes just three months after Meta confirmed plans to release the app.

Threads, the app, has gained immense popularity with five million sign-ups in its first four hours and currently has 30 million users as of Thursday morning. It is considered the most rapidly downloaded app of all time. The app has already attracted several brands, celebrities, and other notable individuals. She hopes that the platform will foster kindness and thoughtfulness, and that people will not feel encouraged to be mean, aggressive or hostile. She believes that this could be a positive new beginning.

How do I Sign up to Threads?

Use Threads, you must have an Instagram account. After signing up, you can choose to follow the same users as on Instagram, provided they also use Threads, or follow new people. However, if you wish to delete your Threads account, you will need to delete your Instagram account entirely.

How similar is Threads to Twitter?

You use Twitter frequently, you’ll see that the apps have many similarities. Both apps have newsfeeds and buttons with heart-shapes to allow users to appreciate other people’s content. Additionally, users can repost content on both platforms. However, there are some differences in the terms used on TikTok- retweets are called ‘reposts’ and tweets are called ‘threads’. Meta has shown openness to being influenced by competitors’ products, such as when they launched Instagram’s Reels feature in 2020, which was quite similar to TikTok. Mark Zuckerberg has admitted that Threads was created to compete with Twitter, saying in a Threads post that he believes there ought to be a social media app for public discussions with over one billion users, and that Twitter has had the chance to create this but missed it. He hopes that Meta will succeed where Twitter did not.

Threads, you can create posts up to 500 characters, which is longer than the usual 280 characters allowed on Twitter. You can also share videos up to 5 minutes long. Additionally, you can share your posts as links on other platforms or share them directly to your Instagram story.
