5 Best Family-Friendly Locations to Visit in Greece

Greece is a country that’s packed with ancient ruins and historical intrigue; it’s also rich in natural appeal, being surrounded by clear blue sea, and immersed in glorious sunshine for much of the year.

It’s a part of the world that might hold considerable appeal for families. But in this respect, certain parts of the country tend to perform better than others. Let’s take a look at some of the best Greek holiday destinations for groups with children.

Corfu (The Ionian Gem)

For generations, British families have been making the trip to this gorgeous Ionian island. It’s easy to see why Corfu might appeal to modern holidaymakers: the scenery is lush, the infrastructure is highly developed, and there are plenty of options when it comes to water-based activities.

Crete (The Big All-Rounder)

Largest of the Greek islands is Crete. Within it, you’ll find an impressive diversity of things to see and do. If you’d like maximum convenience, and endless excitement, then you might consider one of the expansive modern resorts; if you’d prefer a slower pace, then the more secluded villages, largely untouched by the modern tourist industry, might be preferable.

The water here is warm, and there’s enough space that you won’t feel hemmed in, even during the height of tourist season. This goes for the entire island, more or less. However, if you want the best when it comes to beaches and tavernas, it’s the east coast that you’ll want to look at.

Halkidiki (Mainland Marvel)

It isn’t just the islands that are worth looking at. The heavily forested peninsulas of Halkidiki, in the country’s north, are perfect for families. Sheltered by the pine trees are a number of amazing beaches. They’re free from the kinds of sharp rocks that you’ll find in more exposed areas of the coast. To the west of the region is Kassandra, which is packed with nightclubs and resorts. Finally, among the archaeological sites is Stageira, the birthplace of Aristotle.

Rhodes (History and Splash Parks)

Rhodes might appeal for two very different reasons. If you’re looking for a quiet sense of history, there’s the Medieval Old Town, which is an amazingly well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On the other hand, there’s an amazing water park near Faliraki, as well as countless other smaller attractions. If you want to see everything that the island has to offer, pick a reasonably central location, near Faliraki or Lindos.

Kefalonia (Authentic Relaxation)

It might be that you’d prefer to take things a little bit slower for the duration of your trip. Kefalonia might allow you to do this, without compromising on the family-friendly activities that might keep everyone happy. While there aren’t all that many water parks available, what the island does offer is an abundance of clear blue water and endless chances to go snorkelling. During your stay, you’ll want to make a point of visiting the iconic harbour town of Assos.
