Every summer I’m on the hunt for the perfect casual summer bag – the one I can grab for a day at the beach, the park or a daytime explore around a city.
Yes it needs to hold my essentials like phone, wallet keys etc, but it needs to be big enough to hold the summer necessities – water, sunglasses, sun cream, notebook, rolled up sun hat. It’s handy if it’s a cross-body style that leaves my hands free – and if it can be thrown in the washing machine, so much the better.

This elephant bag is a gorgeous hobo bag in the exact soft casual style I’m hunting for. The whole bag is well constructed of quality cotton (so totally okay with being flung in a cool wash when it gets grubby – I suspect at this price you’d need to be careful about colour fastness), and the wide and long shoulder strap can be comfortably worn across shoulder or cross body. Obviously not everyone is a tall bird like me, or likes a bag slung low on their hip – but with a bag like this, it’s so easy to just tie a knot to adjust the length and make it easy to carry.
The classic navy goes with pretty much any summer casual outfit, no matter what sort of summer the Great British Weather throws at us – this’ll look as good with jeans as it will over a flippy summer dress and sandals.
The bag itself is a decent size (17.5″ x 13.5″), and the strap is 23″ (46″ end to end, but it’ll hang 23″ down off your shoulder). You can’t see from the picture, but it closes with a zip as well as a button, so it’s not an open invitation to thieving dippers when you’re in a crowd either (or to seagulls on the beach – last time I went they broke into my cool bag and stole our lunch leftovers while we were in the water!).
