Family Friendly Holidays in the Algarve with Oliver’s Travels | Travel Tuesday

Travel-Tuesday-oliversThe Algarve has long been a popular holiday destination for Brits and it’s not difficult to see why. Sandy beaches, reasonable flights from most airports, reliable weather, great food, great golf… the list goes on. But, did you know it’s also a fabulous base for family holidays? Child-friendly activities abound, whether you opt for a villa holiday or stay in a resort. Here’s a run-down from Oliver’s Travels of some of the best options for a kids holiday in the Algarve:

Kids Clubs

The tourism boom in the Algarve means that custom resorts have intuitively developed everything you could need for a family holiday. One of the best developments are the Kids Clubs. Many resorts offer these as a way to keep kids safe, entertained and having lots of fun during their time in the Algarve. This also provides parents some time to relax and take a little time for themselves, knowing that their children are in safe hands. Some of the best Kids Clubs, (according to Oliver’s Travels) are at the Pine Cliffs resort and Santo Antonio.

Enjoy time in the Algarve with your closest family in this 4-5 person apartment. The interior décor and comfort is all to the highest standard. Guests have access to extensive facilities and pools and the residences are just a short walk to the nearest beach. Children are of course welcome to use the fantastic Kids Clubs on site.

Villa Talulla

10 person Villa Talulla provides a perfect base for a large family holiday. Santo Antonio is a luxurious resort, complete with leisure activities, restaurants and a fantastic Kids Club. The villa itself is complete with a private infinity pool, outdoor table tennis table and even a Playstation 3. All this, plus a Kids Club? Kid heaven!

Slip and Slide

This is a fun one for water-babies and big kids alike. The Algarve has several excellent water parks to choose from, all offering a range of slides and pools to suit everyone in the family: kamikaze slides, wave pools, hot tubs, and plenty of child-safe pools with toys to keep little ones entertained. Some even offer extra attractions like rollercoasters and wildlife shows. Slide and Splash, Aqualand and Aquashow Parque are all conveniently located near to Albufeira and Quarteira.

Zoomarine

An obvious, but valuable family-friendly choice, Zoomarine has recently focussed more of its efforts on conservation, education and rehabilitation of wild marine animals. It does also continue with the original zoo and marine attractions along with yet more waterslides, so make sure you pack your swimmers! It’s an easy drive from Albufeira, or you can pick up an organized coach there from the town centre.

Located on the chic Amendoeira Golf Resort, this family villa is great for sporty groups who like to be close to the action. Set back from the resort, families can enjoy a feeling of privacy but are able to hop on the resort shuttle and soon be in the thick of all the complimentary resort facilities.

Beaches and watersports

It goes without saying that the Algarve has some truly magnificent beaches. Here’s just a couple of our favourites:

Praia de Quarteira

This huge expanse of sandy beach runs almost all the way to Faro. Although it can get crowded during the summer months, it’s worth showing up early to nab a spot. Breakwaters mean that the water is calm and ideal for swimming and playing in the shallows, and the palm fringed boardwalk provides a plethora of beach bars and restaurants to get out of the sun and enjoy some delicious local seafood.

Where to stay:

Vila Quinta Mar

Situated just minutes from Praia de Quarteira, in the resort of Quinta do Lago, this modern villa comfortably accommodates up to 8 family members. With its own heated pool, gas barbeque, and access to all resort facilities, guests will enjoy the best of both worlds on their family villa holiday.

Praia de Altura

A 45-minute drive east from Quarteira, quiet Altura Beach is a relatively undiscovered gem. Flat and sandy, easily accessible and with life guard-patrolled swimming, this beach is sure to be a family favourite. If that wasn’t enough, it also offers a great range of watersports to try, making it well worth the journey.

Villa Splendid

Total luxury awaits you and your family at Villa Splendid. Complete with sumptuous interior, glamourous swimming pool and jacuzzi, this villa has everything you need for a perfect Algarve holiday. A 70's child, I’ve been married for a Very Long Time, and appear to have made four children, and collected one large and useless dog along the way. I work, I have four children, I have a dog… ergo, I do not do dusting or ironing. I began LittleStuff back in (gulp) 2004. I like huge mugs of tea. And Coffee. And Cake. And a steaming cone of crispy fresh fluffy chips, smothered in salt and vinegar. #healthyeater When I grow up I am going to be quietly graceful, organised and wear lipstick every day. In the meantime I *may* have a slight butterfly-brain issue.
