This morning I was stopped on the way out of the school playground by a Dad who has been a playground acquaintance for 10 years. He wanted to let me know that he had spotted ‘something’ hanging loose and bouncing under my car, and thought I ought to get it checked.
I figured the car had got me TO school, so it’d probably get me home to where the Man Who Looks At Cars is.
On the way home I stopped into the local co op (yes, I was THAT worried my car was broken that I thought I’d pop in for milk and bread first), and as I pulled into the car park a man approached my car.
“Excuse me, did you know that you have something dangling under your car?”
I naturally reassured him that yes, I did, and I was on my way (I was, honest. In a roundabout sort of way) to get it looked at.
Imagine my shame when he plopped to his (bare – he was in shorts) knees in the filthy soggy mucky car park and started looking under my car for me. His partner (wife?) appeared and handed him a carrier bag to kneel on (no, I didn’t even have that to offer him… oh, the shame…) and in a few minutes he had unhooked the rogue bungee that had got hooked around the underparts, probably in the recent flood-driving.
He bounced up to his feet with a cheery smile, refused all my thanks, and agreed to his wife that yes they could go shopping now (with his filthy grotty black-water-covered hands and knees).
Talk about going above and beyond – simply taking the trouble to let me know it was there was kind enough (just as Playground Dad had done), I am NOT some frail elderly lady, after all. I am actually more than capable of getting under my own car (though I would totally have NOT done so without a blanket underneath me. Even on dry ground…).
Luckily for me he wasn’t entirely anonymous though. His van and his shirt had a neat logo that I spotted and duly mentally noted.
So I just wanted to say a huge and very public
to the man from UK Bike Park. He’s a Very Nice Man Indeed. *nods*
(and apologies to his wife for disrupting the shopping and making her walk the co op with a very dirty-legged man…)
