Home interior ideas for the novice decorator

The world of interior decoration might seem like quite an elitist area when you look at glossy magazines and watch TV shows featuring homes of the rich and famous.

However, as we’re proving this week with our #TinyRoomsMakeover even the most inexperienced novice decorator can use ideas and concepts from high-end designers to get great results in their own home.

Giving any part of your home a makeover doesn’t need to cost a fortune as long as you have some creative ideas that you can base your work on. Using what you already have can be a cheap and easy way to transform the look of a room and other things you might need don’t have to cost the earth.

Colour schemes

From lurid green to calmest pink – it is just a pot of paint away…

One of the easiest ways to make a dramatic difference to any interior space is to change the colour scheme. The simplest and easiest way is to give it a new coat of paint to rejuvenate tired and chipped gloss surfaces as well as scuffed or marked walls.

This is also one of the most creative ways you can alter the mood and general feel of a room. Brilliant whites and shiny gloss finishes can transform even the darkest space that doesn’t have the benefit of good natural lighting, and adding splashes of intense colours can give warmth, texture and increased perceptions of space.

Wallpaper

Create an impact with even just one wall and a couple of well-chosen rolls of paper.

Of course, the choice of wall coverings includes much more than simply painting. The days when wallpaper was used to literally cover cracks and uneven surfaces are in the past as today’s papers are far more than simply functional.

Modern coverings come in breathable materials that can be water resistant too, so they can be used in various rooms around the home and also be practical for areas that may be prone to condensation or damp problems.

Patterns and arrangements of colour can add personal touches and complement the features of a building in a sympathetic way as well.

Lighting

Interior design encapsulates far more than simply getting your hands dirty by doing the decorating. Having a clear idea of how you want to use a particular style, or mix and match old and new approaches, can lead to highly personalised and unique end results.

Lighting is a perfect example of how creative you can be once the actual decorating work has been finished, although the actual fitting of equipment and wiring can sometimes need to be incorporated before the finishing touches are made to wall and ceiling coverings.

Uplights or downlights can be fitted flush into surfaces, whilst movable lamps can be put to use to achieve any effect you aim for.

A 70's child, I’ve been married for a Very Long Time, and appear to have made four children, and collected one large and useless dog along the way. I work, I have four children, I have a dog… ergo, I do not do dusting or ironing. I began LittleStuff back in (gulp) 2004. I like huge mugs of tea. And Coffee. And Cake. And a steaming cone of crispy fresh fluffy chips, smothered in salt and vinegar. #healthyeater When I grow up I am going to be quietly graceful, organised and wear lipstick every day. In the meantime I *may* have a slight butterfly-brain issue.
