Get yourself ready for Christmas Guests

Ho, ho, ho… here we go again; as Slade tell us in November year after year, ‘Iiiiiiiiit’s Chriiiiiiiiiistmaaaaas!”

Yes, yes, we know it’s still a little bit too soon for Christmas songs, but they do serve as a reminder that the upcoming weeks are about to fly by, and if there is anything that needs planning and organising for the holidays, the time to start is NOW!

Having guests stay over at Christmas is almost inevitable, especially if you are the one member of the family that has a spare room. Perhaps you have children who are going to bunk up together creating a room for the all important guests to sleep in, either way, it IS Christmas, so making your guests comfortable and full of ‘tidings of comfort and joy’ is especially important. Here’s our top tips on making yourself ready for house guests this Christmas season:

  • Firstly, clean up! If you are lucky enough to have a guest room, make sure it is given a good hoover, dusting and airing long before your visitors are due. Dust gathers in every nook and cranny as we all know, and if the room has not been used for a while, it will no doubt smell a little fusty, and I am absolutely sure any mother-in-law would notice that right away! There are lots of plug in air fresheners available, especially seasonal smelling ones, mulled wine, cranberry and orange, pine cone, turkey… okay, maybe not turkey, but it is a lovely touch to make the room smell Christmassy!
  • Check that the bed in the spare room is comfortable. There is nothing worse than having a grumpy tired guest staying for any length of time, especially if their tiredness is due to sleeping on an old worn mattress.
Try the sleeping on the bed yourself for one night and see how it feels. If it has seen better days, perhaps it is an old bed that was kept as a spare for guests, it doesn’t mean the whole bed has to be replaced, it may just need a new mattress. If a new bed or mattress is needed in time for Christmas visit bedstar.co.uk.
  • Once you are satisfied that the bed will be up to even the most finickiest person’s standards, make sure there are plenty of pillows and cushions for your guest. Visitors may not want to be under your feet the whole time they are staying with you, especially if the visit is for several days and nights. Having cushions will be nice for them if they fancy chilling out on the bed with a good book or listening to the radio, or even just for forty winks after dinner! Have a look online or in the shops for cheap festive cushion covers, anything that has reds and greens in the material, or even novelty reindeer or Santa covers, all this will help add the festive touch and show that you have really thought about your guest!
  • Another way to make a guest room festive is to buy sprigs of holly and arrange them in a vase along with seasonal flowers, or even buy a Poinsettia plant; quick, easy and inexpensive ways to stamp Christmas on the spare room!

Everybody likes to feel special and loved especially at Christmas, making the guest room just that little bit more festive and adding just a couple of touches, will make your guest feel appreciated and welcome in your home.. just don’t over-do it, they may never want to leave!

A 70's child, I’ve been married for a Very Long Time, and appear to have made four children, and collected one large and useless dog along the way. I work, I have four children, I have a dog… ergo, I do not do dusting or ironing. I began LittleStuff back in (gulp) 2004. I like huge mugs of tea. And Coffee. And Cake. And a steaming cone of crispy fresh fluffy chips, smothered in salt and vinegar. #healthyeater When I grow up I am going to be quietly graceful, organised and wear lipstick every day. In the meantime I *may* have a slight butterfly-brain issue.
