Safe childrens headphones – fab!

Finally! Headphones actually designed with children in mind! I won’t let mine wear the in-ear buds that came with their MP3 players, but I still worry that without constant monitoring (and often with it) they’ll have them up too loud and damage their ears.

So when JVC contacted me about these new specially-designed 3+ headphones with correct sizing, lightweight super-soft padding AND noise limitation, I jumped at the chance of a review. Only when they arrived, they were the pink version. Which is VERY pink*. My boys recoiled in horror at the very sight of them, but happily Tim over at BringingUpCharlie volunteered his daughter’s services.

Sally’s first reaction was encouraging – Tim mailed me to say “Sally thinks they’re ‘doody’ (whatever that means)…” – doesn’t get much finer, I think.

Here’s what Sally says now she’s been using them for a while:

“These funky JVC headphones are fantastic, especially if you have an annoying little brother who likes to make a lot of noise when you are trying to listen to your iPod! They seem to block out all the sounds from around you and the quality and clarity of the music or audio is amazing.

I also very much like the colour – pink and white, very girly, very me!

Another great thing about the headphones is that they are so comfortable. The padding makes them very easy on the ears and they are adjustable so they can fit perfectly on any size of head. I am listening to my music as I am writing this and it’s all I can hear in a room full of people and toys that sing and dance and generally create a nuisance.

The headphones are a real ‘must have’ for anyone with an iPod or similar device because they make listening to music and audios a real joy to do :) ”

(*Fret not – they do come in blue too!)

Yummy Swaddling Wraps by Aden & Anais

Sadly neither Katy or I had a delicious little newborn baby to try out he Aden & Anais swaddle from LushBaby, so we asked Bec from BeetrootandGherkins to help us out – Blossom seemed quite willing, so happily Bec said yes. Here’s what she thinks:

You want my honest opinion? Of course you do! Well, when I first opened the swaddle wrap and it was still in its packaging I thought ‘’oooh pretty!’’

It’s white with delicate pink hearts on it – pretty but not too pretty. I’m a funky girl at heart, so in turn is my 9 week old daughter Blossom.

However on opening it I thought ‘’Ooooh, pretty rubbish!’’

You see I thought they were trying to con me, ‘’this is just a flaming mahoosive muslin’’ I thought. And what is muslin other than a burp cloth and sick mopper upperer! If you see what I mean?

Well I am first to admit it. I was wrong. It’s flipping fabulous! I literally cannot get it washed quick enough to use again. It is a fabulous size for a swaddle, and because it is a simple square, technically you could keep altering the size of the triangle you fold it into to keep swaddling as your little person gets less, well, little? I am still swaddling Blossom now.

The fact that it is made of muslin means it is breathable so I don’t fret about overheating.

Its size means it makes a nice makeshift play mat when you’re out and about; heck you can even use it as a changing mat whilst on your adventures (careful though, Blossom has some poop that sprays some distance when being changed – one cough and game over!)

They’re £15 each from Lushbaby – but a bargainous £33 for a pack of four (which will save the waiting-for-the-wash issue) and with a wealth of uses way past the newborn swaddle stage.

So I take it back.

It’s not just flaming mahoosive muslin after all!

You can find Bec (along with the most beautiful Blossom and Big Brother Monty (nearly 3) over on Beetroot and Gherkins.

Happy Birthday to ME :)

I’m not really here – I’m on my way to France, thanks to Monsieur KeyCamp, and heading into two weeks of jolly ‘olidays.

But as Katy is In Charge, she’ll never remember to blog such a small thing as my birthday, so I thought I’d tell you all myself. Gifts, Champagne and Cake always welcomed and shall be enjoyed upon my return…

Look – here’s a rare pic of me taken recently. I’m still young, yes?

Yes.

*glowers at anyone hesitating over how to answer that one*

Spotted! Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous bicycle *wants*

So the sun is out, we’re headed towards the summer holidays, and we all want to be outside as much as possible. But of course, a little dash of style here and there never goes astray – and I am a total sucker for a little vintage styling.

I really don’t get my bike out to pop to the shop (car if I’m in a raging hurry, walk if not), but I should.

And I so totally would if I had one of these to glide into town on.

Just take a few seconds, and look. Go on. Sta-a-a-re at it. Now tell me you don’t see yourself in a swingy skirt, riding around with some cloudy lemonade in your basket?

How deliciously perfect is that bicycle? (Oooh! Did you see? I have a mountain Bike. A ‘bike’. Great – but that there in that picture is a ‘bicycle’. Calling that a bike would be like calling my old spinster Maths teacher ‘Maud’. *shudders*)

Oh, and do you know what rounds off its sheer perfectness to another degree?

It’s called ‘Summer Picnic’.

*beam*

(Oh, and in case you’re wondering it was ‘Miss Dennis’…)

We’re all going on a…

…summer-holiday-courtesy-of-KeyCamp doesn’t have quite the Cliff ring to it does it?

But we are, next week, as the lovely people at KeyCamp have offered us a fine getaway.

Now before we hear the bellows of disapproval at us going in term time, let me explain a thing or two… Almost exactly one year ago, my been-sick-for-months 10 year old was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (or M.E. to some). He has had a loo-o-ng, slow fight back to health, and is now, finally, almost back to normal. Almost – but not quite.

Next week, his classmates attend their much-anticipated week-long residential activity course. Better No.1 may be, but up to a week of abseiling, kayaking, rock climbing and midnight-feasting he is not.

And neither are we willing to plop him into a Year 5 class for the week and have him feel yet further isolated and ‘different’.

On top of his own health, we also have the fact that his two younger brothers have had 18mths of “no, we can’t go swimming/to soft play/to the cinema/anywhere at all… No.1 is not well enough”. And not once have they complained, moaned, or muttered about fairness. They’ve simply looked after him, goaded him, poked him a bit… and been the best medicine of all.

So into our laps came the offer of a KeyCamp break. Serendipity? Clearly, as is our family motto, we grabbed the chance with both hands.

And THAT is why we’re off on our oh-so-Jolly Olli-days, in term time.

So ner.

Hoppop Bag review – have you SEEN these?

I hadn't even seen these before, but I did have a little 'oooh!' moment when I did - and wished I had a child that was still small enough to warrant me getting one, actually.

Keris has been reviewing again (we think she only loves us for the review stuff, actually…), and this time she has been putting the Hoppop bag through its paces.

So. Hoppop bag. I’m afraid I don’t have a lot to say about this bag. It just does exactly as it says. It’s a bag and it’s a booster seat. You put the baby’s essentials in the bag and then at mealtimes, you sit the baby on the bag and, you know, feed it (the baby, not the bag). The bag zips open at the front, i.e. behind the baby’s legs, so even if you forget something, you can still reach inside and get it. The bag is rigid so nothing gets squashed and it’s also light so it’s perfectly comfortable to use as a bag too. At the back of the bag there’s a pocket with a folded changing mat inside and there are also side pockets for bottles or other extras PLUS pockets inside for organisation purposes.

The seat portion unclips easily (just two elastics around two buttons) and then you attach the seat to a chair (with an easily clipped strap) and the baby into the seat harness in the usual way. Once you’ve finished, all the straps tuck away. We’ve used it loads of times and Joe loves it. Well, Joe loves being fed, he barely seems to notice the seat at all, but that’s a good thing. It’s one of those items that I can’t believe wasn’t invented sooner and I don’t know how we managed without. (We even use it in cafes/restaurants where they have their own highchairs, since they’re often not all that clean. I mean, ours isn’t either, but at least it’s our own muck, eh?)

Totally fab new NotOnTheHighStreet catalogue

One of my secret places to spend 10 minutes, NotOnTheHighStreet has featured a few times on this blog, and will no doubt appear many more.

Altogether far nicer and easier to navigate than the American Etsy, I just love it for its charm and quirkiness. It always feels like wandering down winding alleyways in the Artisan Quarter of a big city, you just never know what you’re going to come across next.

So, click on the image, and see all the delicious things in the new Home and Family catalogue that you will most certainly NOT find on the high street…

New ‘Family Days Out’ site from Silver Cross

Silver Cross has just launched a new website www.silvercrossdaysout.co.uk – and is inviting all families with young children to visit it, comment on their experiences of days out and read other reviews.

The aim is to enable people to discover the very best venues, near to them, for a fun family day out. To help get the ball rolling, anyone posting a review will be entered into a prize draw to win five family memberships to both National Trust and English Heritage.

Silver Cross decided to build the Days Out website after several of their customers said that they were frustrated that recommendations on many existing websites were commercially motivated and often did not allow for reviews.

‘www.silvercrossdaysout.co.uk  has been set up with reviews of 500 venues to get the site started,’ explains Alan Halsall, the Chairman of Silver Cross. ‘Silver Cross will not allow any advertising or sponsorship on the site as it has been built for the good of the community.  It is up to everyone to take advantage of the reviews and also pass on their own experiences, good and bad, so others can benefit. In today’s difficult economic climate, Silver Cross wanted to help parents find new ideas for great ‘Days Out’ with the children – many of which are free.  Please do get involved – the more everyone contributes, the better and more useful the site will become.’

Spotted! Simply Perfect Penguin Deckchair

Yes, we know, we’ve shown you The Gifted Penguin before. But look. The sun is out.

And Gifted Penguin have Penguin DECKCHAIRS in stock!

Can’t you just see yourself now, lounging comfortably in one of these?  With a vintage radio burbling quietly in the background, and a glass of something icy tucked carefully in the shade underneath as you snooze read away a few hours in the garden.

How much more Heavenly Complete could a summers afternoon get?

Kelly & Piran ‘do the Tour’ for us.

(we’re on a bit of a review roll now, can you tell?!)

The oh-so-lovely Kelly and her most delicious Piran have been reviewing the new Mamas & Papas buggy, the ‘Tour’ for us. It’s a lightweight buggys designed especially for days out and travelling, so we thought it would be a good one to look at. But actually, Kelly loves it so much, she’s using it every day!

Once you get passed the ‘baby’ stage, a quick, lightweight and easy buggy becomes a must – and this one seems to get it right by the bucketload.

You can usually find Kelly over at A Place Of My Own – but she’s on holiday at the moment, introducing Piran to the delights of Cornwall. No doubt taking the Tour on tour. Ahem.

Maternity Wear in Leeds

Look! I want to shop HERE!

The brilliant Vicky and Tracy who are ‘Mummy and Little Me‘ have recently opened their third shop (count ‘em!) – and it looks just stunning from what we can see. Anyone visited yet? It’s in the Corn Exchange Leeds -  finally a place to find beautiful maternity wear in leeds. Inside you’ll find their usual great range of maternity wear, nursing bras, baby changing bags and cute babywear and gifts.

If, like us, you simply live to far away – not to worry, there’s always the website http://www.mummyandlittleme.co.uk. Not quite as nice as the new shop, but close enough – though you’ll have to make your own tea.

Spotted! I WANT to write in one of these journals.

Oh.

Oh oh OH!

Would you just look at these little lumps of lushness? I know so many of the blogging community are writers – and I just know that this will appeal to everyone, anyone who simply loves to hold a pen in their hand and have a pure blank sheet of nice paper before them.

Who doesn’t long to spend the day with one of these and a delicious pen, maybe in a cafe (probably a french one) watching the people go by and writing, writing, writing?

Sigh.

Well, that may take a little longer to accomplish, but having one of these leather journals in your bag wuld be a Very Fine Way To Start, I think.

And as it’s from EcoChic, it’s a guilt-free Fairly Traded item of desirability.

Oh, my, yes it is.

Cheeky Wipes – Resuable baby wipes (Really?) review

We gave our intrepid reviewer Keris the fragrant and enviable task of the Cheeky Wipes review, seeing as she has a small boy with a lovely appetite (and we all know what THAT means in the nappy department).

Now Keris’ reviews are always worth a read, but this one has to be my favourite all time review…

“I was a bit apprehensive about these wipes. Who could be bothered with reusable wipes? Seriously? Have you seen the state wipes get into? Have you seen what you, you know, wipe? And you want me to leave that hanging around the house? It took me a little while even to open the boxes since I decided it was going to be fiddly, smelly and pointless. Shows what I know.

You get two Tupperware-style boxes with click-fix lids. One box is for dirty wipes and one for clean wipes. You half-fill the boxes with water and put a few drops of essential oil in each (two different oils: one for dirty, one for clean). You also get a mesh bag for washing the dirty wipes and I put this inside the dirty box so I could put the dirty wipes straight in the bag and then take the bag out and put it straight into the washing machine.

The wipes themselves are small, white, towelling squares. They’re wet (cos of the water they’ve been soaking in in the box) so you just give them a squeeze and then wipe. No problems at all for number ones, obviously. And with wipes used for number ones, I didn’t even bother putting them in the dirty box, I just threw them straight in the washing machine – it’s on every day anyway.

Now this is going to be a bit indelicate, but it’s with number twos that Cheeky Wipes really shine. Because they are towelling and so a bit textured, they clean a dirty bottom much quicker and more easily than a wet wipe. There’ve been some of Joe’s nappies that I know would have taken four or five wet wipes and the job’s been done with just one Cheeky Wipe. Yes, you have to wipe the excess off with the nappy before you start wiping, but you should probably do that with a wet wipe anyway.

So then you’re left with a slightly poo-soiled piece of towelling. Put it in the dirty box (and bag), shut the lid and forget about it. Easy. Except for one thing… I found transferring the wet bag – which was, let’s not forget, dripping, um, number two juice – into the washing machine to be a bit of a sickener. But I’ve just had the idea of putting the whole box inside the empty washing machine and quickly yanking the bag out and dropping it, so that will almost certainly help. Now wash your hands.

They also come with a couple of waterproof bags for using Cheeky Wipes when out and about. I haven’t done this. Partly because I don’t get out much, but mainly because I really don’t want to be carrying a bag of poo-juice around with me, however waterproof. So I still use disposable wipes when I’m on the go.

I also must admit to something a bit shameful. Part of the reason I wasn’t that keen on trying Cheeky Wipes was that I use wet wipes for all sorts of non bottom-related stuff. I’ve used them to take off my make-up. To clean the highchair, furniture, the hob. I use them to polish the kettle (they’re excellent on stainless steel), the TV and computer screens, even shoes. So I didn’t want to give that up. But the great thing is, you can do the same thing with Cheeky Wipes! (Apart from removing make-up, but again, I shouldn’t really be using them for that anyway. I’m 38.).

The one thing I’ve been disappointed with is how grotty the Cheeky Wipes that have been washed look. (No, not all of them have been washed yet!) They started off white and pristine and they’ve come out of the washing machine a bit grey and sad-looking. But that might be my non-existent washing “skills”. And that’s a purely aesthetic thing anyway. It doesn’t really matter what they look like where they’re going, does it?

Casha Poncho – just plain fabulous!

The gorgeously pregnant Alics has been reviewing the Casha Poncho for us – it’s not actually maternity wear, but is so perfect for a quick cover up with or without a bump.

In the Casha Cashemere Poncho, Alice says

“Hark!  What’s this?  Why, it’s something that fits over my enormous bump!

Quality-wise it is lovely, really soft, a beautiful shade of grey, and well constructed.  It is really very sophisticated and smart.  Completely fine for turning up to work meetings… it has really come into its own is as an emergency layer.  It folds down really small and is so easily slung in my handbag, so is great for this unpredictable British weather.  Rather than wondering whether or not to take a bulky cardigan out or not I can now just grab the poncho… perfect!”

You can find Alice over at Backstitch, a brilliant place to stop by if you’re into fabric and patterns.

Blog Love – Sticky Fingers and Tara’s Gallery

This weeks Blog Love is for not just one post (though this one is a good one) but a whole series. It’s to Tara over at Sticky fingers for her fabulous Gallery. Every week she sets a prompt, and you have a week to post your entry on your own blog – then everyone links back on The Gallery, and every Wednesday you can while away an entire morning in blogosphere looking at everyone else’s entries. It’s not just about the amazing photography, though – this is simply a brilliant way of exploring some new blogs, and rediscovering old ones.

Even if you haven’t entered, take a look at even just a handful of the links – and make sure you leave a comment, it’s the nice thing to do.  I guarantee every blogger out there reads every single comment (though some are more polite than others at answering them!). I know I personally take the gallery prompt far too seriously – more like Maths homework, really – and I know I’m not alone. When people put effort into a post, please do remember to stop and let them know what you think.

So, make yourself a cup of tea and then go click on the pretty daisy; take yourself off to Sticky fingers and lose yourself in over a hundred different takes on ‘Motherhood’. Marvellous.
